How Can we Allow This?

How can this Troy Davis shit stand!! This is the first time in a long time that I've truly been pissed the fuck off! Anyone with half a brain can look at the facts of his case and see that this man doesn't deserve to die. Where is Obama in all of this? He has the power to pardon anyone. They usually wait until the end of their presidency, and then use the power to pardon their crooked ass friends, but we shall see.

Practical Politics

I am about to unleash some "populist rage!"

Not really. I just wanted to relay an experience that I had this week that makes me inclined to get my "class warfare" on.

I was recently recruited, screened, interviewed, screened again (in a highly intimate manner, ahem) and ultimately offered a temporary position with a research company to conduct the National Children's Study* in Pinal County, AZ.

I was excited to do this! I was excited to have a job that met my expectations in pay, position, value and really excited to be working again (unemployed since January). I didn't mind that it was temporary and meant to use to the funds to get my herbalism practice off the ground.

What happened instead is that I got a call the eve of the start of scheduled training telling me that "Unfortunately, the position will not be moving forward due to lack of government funding." The study is run and funded by National Institute of Health.

Bummer. I don't take it personally. What I am beginning to take personally is talk like this: "Multi-Millionaire Rep. Says He Can’t Afford A Tax Hike Because He Only Has $400K A Year After Feeding Family"

What happened to shared responsibility? This is what a lot Republicans cite when slashing funds for the Endowment of the Arts and the like. Job creator? This is a real-world example of the government creating a job. One job. One temporary job. And this may mean nothing to a man who makes six-figures in profit every year, who can rattle off the butterfly effect of cutting back on his housekeeping, his dining habits, and his empire-building. But this meant a lot to me. And I didn't lose the job, I never had it. So I'm keeping my reality in check. And he can can keep doing thought experiments on the ifs/ands/buts of what this change in the tax code means to him and those he employs (although he must know that the restaurant server isn't his employee, right?). Meanwhile, I've got a degree. I've got a specialty. I've got a passion for this thing that I know how to do and could do, if for some cash behind me. And this government job could have set me up pretty well to create my own business, my OWN job. But we all know the government doesn't do that.

We should really focus on the deficit, you're right.

*This study's aim is to identify how children and families all over the country are faring in the arenas of education, healthcare, emotional well-being and social relationships. This is done through person-to-person interviews by individuals selected to get the most accurate and complete information from primarily women. So, in Pinal county this includes a lot of women a lot like me: young, with medium-sized to large families, brown, rural roots, limited access to healthcare, undereducated, conservative in values, and largely underrepresented in our NeoConservative AZ legislature.
